MISSION TO LARS - THE DOCUMENTARY

Rocker Lars Ulrich has appeared in film before, but never really served to drive the movie’s entire plot. The new documentary, Mission To Lars, centers on Tom Spicer, a learning disable man who sets out with his siblings on a quest to track down his favorite rocker. Spicer suffers from Fragile X Syndrome, a sort of autism, and had always asked his journalist sister Kate if he could meet the Metallica drummer. The film follows Kate and her filmmaker brother William as they break Tom out of his care home and set out on a journey from England to different parts of the U.S. hoping to make the connection. Kate explains, “We had this fantasy of hitting the road with Tom and recreating some of the magic of our teenage years, cruising around in cars, eating Burger King, and listening to heavy metal on the tape deck. We thought it would be fun, bonding. We wanted to do something good for our brother. We were also sick of him endlessly asking.” The family have screened the film for Ulrich, who approved, and they’re currently showing the film to raise awareness and garner funds for Mencamp, with all profits for the film going to the organization. The film will have a small theatrical release in the U.K. in June.
