94XPOSED WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 3RD
Buddy Holly (Born Charles Holley)
September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959 Buddy Holly was a gifted singer-songwriter who, even though his career lasted just a year and a half, was arguably the most important figure in the birth of rock ‘n roll. Holly was more of a traditional country artist before being inspired by Elvis Presley and Bill Haley to add elements of rockabilly into his music in 1955. The following year, he was signed by Decca Records and formed his back-up band, the Crickets. Over the next eighteen months, Holly released one hit single after another. They included “Peggy Sue,” “That’ll Be the Day,” and “Oh Boy.” These songs became a direct influence on the likes of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. Just as Holly’s career was beginning to take off, tragedy struck. February 3, 1959…it’s been called “the day the music died.” While on a U.S. mid west tour called the Winter Dance Party, Holly, J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and Ritchie Valens were on a small Beechcraft airplane en route from Mason City, IA to Moorhead, MN. The winter weather was taking its toll on the traveling musicians. Waylon Jennings had originally been slated to fly ahead, but gave up his seat to Richardson at the last minute. Shortly after take off, the plane carrying rock ‘n roll’s brightest new stars crashed into an empty field killing everyone on board. Initial reports blamed pilot error on Roger Peterson, but future examinations vindicated him, putting the blame squarely on the bad weather conditions. Buddy Holly was 22 at the time of his death.

----------------------BREAK--------------------- In a new blog post on Facebook, Shirley Manson hints that she has been doing some recording with the other members of Garbage. In the posting, Manson congratulates her bandmate Butch Vig on his Grammy win (for producing Green Day's 21st Century Breakdown, which won Best Rock Album) and tells a story about Patti Smith. At the very end though, she reveals she "just spent a week in the studio" with Vig and the other members of Garbage. The band has essentially been on hiatus since 2005. GARBAGE - STUPID GIRL RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - RENEGADES OF FUNK Music journalists Behrang Tonekaboni and Kayvan Farzin have been arrested by the Iranian authorities. No reason has been given for this action, but the two were nabbed at the offices of Farhang va Ahang, a monthly music journal, on January 5. Behrang’s mother Lily Farhadpour, a journalist and a member of Iranian NGO Mothers for Peace, was arrested at her home on January 20. According to Amnesty International, ‘all three appear to have been subjected to enforced disappearance and are at risk of torture’. Amnesty International is calling on the Iran government to explain why these arrests happened, where the they’re being held and guarantees that they’ll be treated fairly. It’s very unusual for Classic Rock to get involved in anything political, but this is clearly a worrying situation – and one that should be addressed. Sure makes our school closures seem pretty petty doesnt it? --------------------------BREAK-------------------- Ernie Ball has recently partnered with longtime endorsee Slash, to provide the once in a lifetime opportunity for over 20 guitarists to attend a private masterclass with Slash in Hollywood, CA.
