On this day in 2009, Les Paul, the Wizard of Waukesha, passed away at the age of 94. In addition to being an innovative guitarist and beloved entertainer (along with his wife, Mary Ford), Paul was a trailblazing inventor whose accomplishments include pioneering developments in multitrack recording and the solid-body electric guitar. To this day, Gibson proudly honors Les Paul with the guitar that bears his name. He loved to entertain people. He loved to play… at any cost. This is the man who, after an elbow-shattering car accident in his 30s, had his arm set at the right angle for playing. This is the man who, in his 90s, underwent arthritis treatment and developed new playing techniques, so that he could keep playing every Monday night at the Iridium for as long as was possible. The Wizard is gone, but his wizardry will last forever. Many Stars refuse to play with anything other than a Les Paul, the most noteworth being Slash, who was good friends with the guitar pioneer!

VELVET REVOLVER - FALL TO PIECES
WARRANT - CHERRY PIE

Former Warrant singer Jani Lane has been found dead in a California hotel room. He was 47. Lane, real name John Kennedy Oswald, wrote some of the band's biggest hits including Cherry Pie, Heaven, I Saw Read and Uncle Tom's Cabin. He split with Warrant in 2008 after a second stint fronting the band which lasted just six months. He'd left in 1993 then rejoined a year later before departing again in 2004. He'd struggled with alcoholism for many years – a problem which he recently admitted was beginning to affect his health. There are some rumoured reports of Vodka and prescription drugs found at the scene.

Western Acts who appeared included Mötley Crüe, Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Scorpions. This was the first time that an audience had been allowed to stand up and dance at a stadium rock concert in the Soviet Union. Previous to this, all concerts had to be seated.
