JIMI HENDRIX - ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER
Paul McCartney paid tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix during his headlining set at Britain's Isle of Wight festival on Sunday, June 13, admitting he was overwhelmed to learn the rocker was a big fan of The Beatles. The star regaled the audience with tales of his heyday with the Fab Four and, during one anecdote, he opened up about his little-known friendship with Hendrix in the 1960s. He told fans, "I was really lucky to know Jimi and hang out with him a little bit in the 60s, he was a great guy. The biggest tribute we had from him was we (The Beatles) released (1967 album 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band') Sgt. Pepper on a Friday and then I went to see him on the Sunday and he learned it; how cool was that for me? Very cool!" McCartney also played part of Hendrix's track "Purple Haze" during his massive 27-song set, which included hits such as "Let It Be", "Live And Let Die" and "Hey Jude". Hendrix's landmark show at the first Isle of Wight festival in 1970 remains one of the most famous rock performances ever.
