JUNKHOUSE - SHINE

Former Junkhouse member and producer Dan Achen has died. The Hamilton, Ont. musician and owner of the city's Catherine North Studios passed away after suffering a heart attack while playing hockey on Monday (March 15) night. Now thats a badass Canadian! Passes away playing hockey! Achen not only played guitar in Junkhouse, but is related to one of Canada's greatest contemporary singer/songwriters and produced some of this century's most well-received Canadian albums. Its sad that he is gone but lets not dwell on the begative lets look at the reasons why Dan Achen was cool:
1. Achen formed Junkhouse in 1989 with singer/guitarist Tom Wilson, bassist Russ Wilson and drummer Ray Farrugia. They released three albums — 1993's Strays, 1995's Birthday Boy and 1997's Fuzz — before splitting that same year.
3. Achen ran the revered Catherine North Studios in Hamilton. He bought the converted church in the city in 2000 and turned it into a beautiful recording studio. He kept its stained glass windows and the pipe organ. Achen operated the studio with his friends Duke Foster and Michael Chambers.
4. Achen was Feist's uncle. That's awesome enough in itself, but...
5. Feist got her start at Catherine North, and recorded her first demos there. The studio had such an influence on her that when it came time to record 2007's Juno and Grammy Award-winning The Reminder, Feist wanted to record in an environment similar to Catherine North.\
10. All of you Dallas Green superfans owe City & Colour's Bring Me Your Love to Achen. Green co-produced the record with Achen, who cut it at Catherine North. Achen is also credited with performing "stomps" on that album.

Against Me! will return with their fifth studio album, White Crosses, on June 8. The Sire Records release is the band's second disc on the major label and is the follow-up to 2007's very successful New Wave. Butch Vig — who helmed the first record, and was also Nirvana's producer of choice — returns as producer on White Crosses, which was recorded last summer and is their first record without drummer Warren Oakes, who left the band last year.

JIMI HENDRIX - VALLEY OF THE NEPTUNE

On August 26th, 1970, Jimi Hendrix celebrated the official opening of his Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan’s West Village. It would be the last time he ever set foot in his beloved recording sanctuary; he died three weeks later in London at age 27 after ingesting a powerful dose of the sedative Vesperax. But a month prior to the party, the man Rolling Stone would later name the Greatest Guitarist of All Time laid down a few special tracks, including a jam with Steve Winwood on “Valleys of Neptune,” in Electric Lady’s Studio A. That song, in a different incarnation, is now the centerpiece of a new collection of previously unreleased Hendrix gems called Valleys of Neptune. In the new issue of Rolling Stone on sale at newsstands today, David Fricke dives into Hendrix’s last days and lost recordings, tracing the epic plans and earthly troubles that marked the guitar god’s final months.

2005 – Robert Plant was presented with a Lifetime GRAMMY Achievement Award while playing the South By Southwest music festival. Plant, who was giving a keynote speech, had been unable to attend the GRAMMYS earlier in the year, so Recording Academy President Neil Portnow surprised him by flying to Austin to present him with the honor.
